Well, now that the sickening obsession with romance is done with for the year, its about time for a real holiday, correct?

Of course, you are all welcome to my yearly Mardi Gras celebration. But, dear community, you must help me decide which world to host it on.

So. Endless festivities? Stunning fireworks? Vivid gardens? Canals and gondolas? Or would you prefer mere free drink and food?

As always, you answers are most fascinating.

So you have access to many worlds?

I do indeed, though travel through the community network is vastly easier than travel through the Overcosm or Tacheon dimensions.

Why is that?

My galaxy is fraught with something called "time dilation". The faster one travels, the faster time passes for everyone but you. The ways of getting around that; by warping into a different dimension; are dangerous, difficult, and take a substantial amound of power.

I do, though I do not use it often.

All of those sound good on their own. You always have a lot of options. It's almost like a community party.

Please don't be offended, but is there something in particular you dislike about Valentine's Day? [No one gave you chocolate, did they?]

Indeed. But one that people can attend if they wish, rather than being dragged to by the community.

Mmm, well it is true that my partner is...indisposed at the moment, so perhaps I am biased. But it always seems so shallow, a celibration of the external aspects of love, of lust hidden as affection. Lust is all well and good, but the hypocrisy of declaring it "love" and pretending that outward displays will make shallow feelings into genuine connections is hypocritical at best, and deeply manipulative at worst.

I'm sorry. I don't really think that's it, though. There's a lot of real love there if you just look. I guess I'm not the best person to ask about it either, though.

Perhaps you are right. It is a holiday that is not often celibrated on my worlds, and the closest things to it...well, they are mostly concerned with the act rather than the emotion.

But both of us have had unlucky experiences with love. Your belief, in spite or because of your experiences, gives you just as much right to speak on the subject as I. More, perhaps, since it is all too easy for the old to forget the innocent yearning of youth.

I just haven't had very good luck, but I know it can happen and it does all the time. Even to people who have given up. You've seen the same things, too, right?

It would be nice for everyone to do something, though.

Indeed I have. But occasionally the obsession with love gets old, and it is nice to fall back upon revelry and simpler passions.

I would be happy to invite you, and any others who are interested, to my celibration.

No. The event we'll be attending has plenty to go around. But you may want to bring a mask.

Its a custom, both on this world and for Mardi Gras. Supposedly it hides the identity...but I've always viewed masks as quite freeing.

If you do not have a mask of your own, I have quite a collection to choose from.

Hah. No, my reasons are more...complex. I no longer have any need for them in my home galaxy, but here on the community there are many who might be disturbed or overly curious should they see my scars. Easier to wear a mask than have to tell the whole sad history over and over again.

But there certainly was a time when I needed the masks and the deceptive protection they offered.

Nn? I've been on here a while and heard of a buncha weird holidays, but Mari Gras's a new one on me.

Oh, sir, then you have missed out on a wonderful festival. Mardi Gras, or Carneval, is a celibration of debauchary, of reverly and merriment, of extreams and hedonism. There is some religeous reason for it, but as far as I can tell it is a party for the last gasp of winter, to give people something to look forward to in cold winter months, before spring has begun.

And it is lovely. There are masks and parades, and for one night people let their passions run wild, showing their true selves with the aid of anonymity.

Exactly. A day - or week, depending on the celebration - where there is no judgment or morals to be upheld. Quite fun.

You would have to ask their religeous leaders to answer that question. I must admit I cannot fathom it.
