This community has some sort of energy source; most likely, it's magic-based, but I don't want to jump to conclusions. Either way, most people theorize it's caused by it acting as some kind of nexus between worlds, and that bond creates energy and the energy has to be dispersed somehow.

So . . . it gets dispersed in the form of viruses, which can do anything from genetically to psychologically alter the members here. The last part's the only real, definite truth that we know for sure; that, and the part about this being a nexus between worlds. You'll meet a lot of people who are from Earth, but not the same Earth as you, or even me.

The energy building and dispersing is just a theory proposed to explain the viruses.
