Um, community, I sort of had a few questions. It's because of some things that some people told me that didn't make a lot of sense to me, though I'm sure they made sense to them, so I guess I shouldn't be upset about it, but it still made me wonder.

What kind of person is considered better than everybody else where you're from because of something they can't control? And, um, what kind of person is a mutant or different in a bad way?

I think what's good in one world might be bad in the others... or something.

No one should be considered better than anyone else.

I know you wouldn't, you're a kind girl.

Who has been telling you they are?

[identity profile] makewayforroze.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
No one's bothering you?

[identity profile] makewayforroze.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Are you sure? It's alright to tell me if they are.

[identity profile] makewayforroze.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Alright.

In some worlds, people are considered bad different just from being different at all. It's not fair and there are a lot of people who are against treating others that way.

It depends what's normal for that world. In some places, those who have magic are in danger. Sometimes it's as small as the way they look.

[identity profile] makewayforroze.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes people don't understand things like magic. Things we don't know about can scare us, can't they?

[identity profile] makewayforroze.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
So we get scared of the people who can do the things we don't understand.

But there are also a lot of people who know that we can be different without being better or worse than one another.

[identity profile] makewayforroze.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
But it's good to be asking questions. The best way to not be afraid of things we don't understand is to try to understand them.

Some things are dangerous and we need to know to be careful but for the rest of the things, I think it would work very well.

Where I come from, men are generally considered superiour to women, and Caucasians usually think themselves superiour to those of other races, although that seems to have changed in more recent years. Of course, there are many others - far, far too many to list.

As for "bad" differences, I suppose it would mostly be related to skin colour, your physical appearance, your level of intelligence, your biological sex, your social status, whom you choose to love... Anything and everything can be a "bad" sort of difference on my world, I'm afraid.

Sometimes, a mutant is a fortunate accident of evolution. Most complex species, including humans, formed from mutations that differentiated them from their ancestors on a genetic level.

Or, as you said, adaptation. Good for a certain species' situations, but maybe not for all.

A difference that doesn't lead anybody to being harmed isn't a bad thing. At least not bad enough that they should be harmed for it.

[identity profile] thesleeperwakes.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but simply because people are this way, that doesn't mean it must be so. One cannot help being who they are, and they shouldn't be considered lesser in any way because of it.

It's easy. There are gods, that are better than anybody, and then there's the rest of creatures.

[Biased much, Eris?]

[identity profile] sotobas-lot.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
It depends how much they hurt others. The only way to respect people with differences is to treat them as equals. That means under the law, too.

[identity profile] sotobas-lot.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
But, the law's a human thing, too. A little understanding of someone acting out of fear isn't a bad thing, either.

[identity profile] chaos-godess.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That is it.

Well, someone has to hold this opinion in a world that appears to be against it.
