[The webcam switches on, and we have a view of a garden terrace at twilight, a few bushes in bloom and a few early fireflies flitting about in the grass and trees.

[Muraki is lounging on a chaise lounge, dressed in a light, summer-weight shirt and slacks, collar open, reading through a pile of letters, a pitcher of something cool and bright with ice cubes on a table beside him. He'll reach behind it, picks up a glass, sips from it. He looks utterly relaxed and contented. But there's a big pile of letters for this to be a typical summer evening...

[He glances up and smirks at the camera.]

Would anyone care to help me open the mail that piled up whilst I was away on a working vacation?

It was a working vacation, and that made it rather a mix of work and pleasure, but at least they balanced each other.

Hmm, I do, but ...there are a few things which I would rather that my secretary didn't see. I'm a rather private man...

I was working on a cruise ship that was also hauling some light cargo: I was serving as the personal physician to the ship owner's daughter, and I was also providing care in the ship's sick bay. We were on a round trip from the port city of Hakata to Hong Kong and a few other port cities around the China Sea, and it took several weeks all told.

Some of it consisted of letters from admiring patients, but the rest was, I'll admit, rather dull letters from business associates and colleagues of various sorts, a few creditors and the architect and contractors with whom I'm working, since the family mansion is in need of repairs.

I have something of an inheritance from my grandfather, though some of the legalities are still being sorted out: he was a canny investor and I'm still finding accounts that he'd hidden away.

I'll be shredding them and having the paper recycled: I feel like I need to apologize to the trees whose pulp had to be used for such tripe, so that would allow the paper to, hm, be returned to the cycle of rebirth, as it were.

Yes, it's rather warm at this time of the year, since Hong Kong is further south than where I live. It was pleasant on the water, though: the breezes on deck were quite bracing.
