Of course it's a popularity contest, everyone is going to vote for their friend or loved one because the community is involved, but they have the potential to be more impartial than the competitors. Besides how do you think all of the competitors would vote? Voting for yourself doesn't change the outcome, it just means we all start out with one vote.
