I don't know about the community, but where I live, it's something we do for our friends. Aside from little presents for the people we're close to, sometimes there are things where you put your name into a hat with a bunch of other people, and everyone gets a name, and you have to find something small but interesting for that person. It's called a "secret Santa".

Did something happen? I haven't seen anything like that.
