Kaye tells me it's a tradition to set resolutions for oneself at the turn of the year. I've not done this before, and am a little confused, I suppose, but agreed I'd do it with her. But...what sort of resolutions is one to make? Are there consequences if they are not kept? If there aren't consequences, are they ever kept, and if not, is there really a point to these resolutions?

I suppose my point is, what are your resolutions, and do you plan to keep them?

I have resolved to be...a stronger, better person.

That sounds like a good ambition, but how does one carry out such a resolution?

A-ah! ...Um...Perhaps...Oh! I'll wear men's clothing two days of the week! That will make my family less humilated!

Mostly? Make resolutions about how to make yourself a better person. People usually wind up breaking them, but... It helps for at least a little while.

So it's more a universal effort to improve, and the new year constitutes a new beginning?

That's the idea, yeah. Personally? I really don't bother with it, most years.

Is it the idea of trying to improve yourself that you disagree with, or the knowledge that the resolution will be broken and is therefore both frivolous and pointless that turns you off to it, I'm curious to know.

It's the feeling of failure when you realize you broke it. Because, while you haven't let anyone else down, you've... let yourself down. And you're still the same godawful person you thought needed to change at the beginning of the year.

I suppose that's a fear I could relate to. You can always run from yourself, but it seems you can never run fast enough.

But, I suppose, you also can't improve without trying, and maybe that's the magic of these resolutions: striving to be better and therefore taking the first steps. It's hard for people to change, and often starting is the hardest part.

Hey, if it works for even one person, it's a good plan. Doesn't mean it's for everyone.

It's more of a tradition that any kind of mandatory thing. Kind of a "new year, new start" sort of idea, and you don't get in trouble if you don't keep 'em.

I dunno what my resolutions are. Not get in the way of the Autobots too much, I guess. Keep my grades up. Stuff like that.

If these autobots are your friends, though--that is, if they care for you the way you care for them--they shouldn't find your interactinos with them to be "getting in the way"; they should enjoy your company. Nonetheless, it's commendable to think of your friends. I wish you luck with upholding your resolutions, and wish you a happy new year.
