It's caught my attention that there seems to be another holiday coming up. Valentine's Day, or something along those lines.

The concept itself seems rather simple. If someone considers themself to be in love, they send flowers or chocolates to their... "beloved". Women especially seem to enjoy this holiday, although for what reasons that is I'd rather not even consider.

But what catches my interest is why the people of Earth find the need to set aside a special day for this alone. If it's not important enough to take a day off from work, then why should it even be decreed a holiday?

Or are the men there so unreliable that giving gifts to the one they are enamored with slips their minds unless there's a specific date for it?

Men are stupid.

It's an excuse to jack up the price of chocolate and use the tacky decorations left over from New Year's.

Some people do. They enjoy setting themselves up for disappointment.

Aren't you supposed to be babysitting the idiot.

My Yoru and I don't even give each other gifts, we just spend time together. So we're not unreliable!

I think it depends how you decide to celebrate it. And it can be really fun!

[identity profile] lolcrayons.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's really a proper way to celebrate it. My country does it differently than a lot of other countries, for example!

The day is an excuse to give someone chocolates. Especially if you like that person but they don't like you back and they give you this disgusted or possibly angry look wondering why you even gave it to them and you can use the excuse, "It's Valentines Day." because you know really that person is too much of a jerk to get chocolates from anyone. Except I don't have to worry about Valentines Day since I'm not a girl.

Couldn't all holidays be described that way if you wanted to? "Why don't they just do this all the time if it's so important?"

It would kind of lose it's meaning and specialness if people did it all the time.

I don't know if you've ever been in a relationship but flowers once are nice and romatic. Twice is ok. One hundreds times is plain annoying. And if the person I'm with spends every second of the day telling me how much he loves me I'm going to want to tell him to shut up already.

We men do have the tendency to forget, we get a little bit of a chance to make up for it on Valentines day. Heaven forbid we forget that one, too, or there'll be hell to pay.

[identity profile] michaeldawn.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose they'd jog it if I had anyone to buy a valentine for.

[identity profile] shunraiken.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
The entire concept is ridiculous.

You're not the only one who has that sentiment.

I don't really need a special day.

...Although White Day is confusing and it's not for another month.

Note to self. Tell Michiru I like thin mints.
