Back in the old days..
I thought since Pele did this, I would share a tale my mother, the wolf god Moro, told me. This is an old animal god story.
Before the human numbers were so great, the world was ruled by giant animal gods. The ones alive now look like mere cubs compared to the ones of old. In those ancient days there were many fights amongst the animal clans.
One fight was between the bird clan and fish clan.
The bird clan ruled the skies. Their wings could darken the sun as they flew by. One ruler of a flock of these gods was named Takayuki. Takayuki was the largest of all the bird gods; so large that every time he flapped his great wings it sounded like thunder! He was also very proud.
Takayuki was flying above the ocean one day. Out of the corner of his eye, there was a large fish god swimming just underneath the surface. As he was watching this fish Takayuki realized his stomach was empty. Well, that was lucky! The fish could feed him (and his clan) for at least a week. And the glory of bringing down the beast would be all Takayuki's.
Opening his claws, he dived for the fish god. The great bird's talons closed on the back of the fish but the fish's strength surprised Takayuki. With a twist, the fish got out of the bird god's clutches and fell back to the ocean with a great crash. Takayuki wouldn't have that, so he went back after the fish again.
Once again, he drew the fish out of the water. The fish struggled more this time, writhing like a serpent trapped in a net. But Takayuki's mind was set. Higher and higher he flew with the fish. Then once the weight got to him, he dropped the fish. The fish god crashed into the water and waves the size of mountains crashed against the shore.
Takayuki searched for the fish so that he could eat it but the fish hadn't died from the fall so it wasn't floating on the surface. Surprised, he gave a harsh cry.
To this day Takayuki searches for the fish, his pride won't let him let it go. Everytime he finds it, the shore is hit with great walls of water.
((...I'm so sorry to those who know Japanese myths but...yeah. :|))
