This is something that's been sitting in the back of my head for a while, so I thought I might as well ask.

What kind of wifes tales do you guys have on your worlds?

If you don't know what those are, they're little stories that people make up like; if you hate someone, then your child will end up looking like them and taking after them.
Or, if a piece of silver wear falls on the floor, it means company is coming. And if you don't want them to come you put it under water.

I know millions of them. What about you guys?

One of the most common here refers to the number of times you sneeze. Once if someone is talking kindly about you, twice if they're talking rudely. There's also a variant that doesn't refer to the manner they're speaking in, just that they are.

I believe it's similar to how Westerners sometimes believe someone is speaking about you when your ears are burning.

Really? Here when you sneeze three times it's considered a sign you're getting a cold.

I see you've been told that the number four is unlucky. It's the same here, although we consider the number eight to be a very lucky number.

I've heard one saying you could prevent leg cramps by sleeping with a bar of soap between the sheets. And something about rainbows I can never remember.

I'm pretty sure that's one of the ones that was a result of boredom and nothing else.

I wouldn't be surprised. Probably a lot about weather in general.

Seeing one crow is bad, but two bring luck. Three crows bring health, and four means wealth. Five crows bring sickness and six bring death.

There is also one that I have heard about cats being able to steal the air from a sleeping infant.

Which is might not be bad, considering not all witches have dark intentions.

I agree. Tis a reputation they do not deserve.

Osaka seems to think that perfectly splitting a pair of chopsticks is some kind of good luck charm. I have a feeling she just made that up herself though...

[identity profile] wildcat-hs-girl.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It took Osaka a good few weeks to master doing it herself.

Then again, that's Osaka for you.

I once visited a country which believed the world would end on a certain day, if that counts.

Step on a crack, break your mother's back.

Black cat cross my path. Bad luck.

Mirror, ladder, spilling salt all bad luck.

Least it only comes true on Friday the 13th.

[identity profile] crackpotcrocker.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it has to do with the FAIRIES!! Here.

They make all of those come true on any Friday the 13th and only Friday the 13th. Otherwise, they're just silly.

But yes, least you've heard of them.

I see that one of my world's wives' tales has been told to you - the one about sneezing. However, I've got another to add to your list!

It involves the number 4. Here, it's considered an unlucky number. Inns and hospitals often exclude room numbers with many fours, or the fourth floor of the building.

I hope this information has been of assistance in your search for otherworldly knowledge! If you'd like more, I'm sure I could find some!

[identity profile] spandex-rex.livejournal.com 2009-07-18 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well you see, in the language used here the word for "four" is pronounced similarly to the word for "death". Because of that, the number is associated with death and is therefore unlucky. Most superstitions run along the same lines here.

I for one believe that people make their own luck, but even I'll admit that the resemblance is a bit eerie!
