... A Gear is what most would consider a demon. Contrary to mythos, though, they were originally constructed by humans to serve as soldiers for humanity so they wouldn't have to fight anymore.

But I'm sure you could guess what happened when they found out about that fact.

For the most part. There are still ones that are what you'd expect, though. They just aren't as common anymore.
