... Yeah, maybe I should have mentioned that in this case "mercenary" means "wandering adventurer and occasionally bandit-exterminator". My world is somewhere around the later end of what I think Earth calls the Middle Ages.

It's not quite a virus like a disease - or for that matter like a computer virus. We just call them that.

As far as I'm aware, no one outside the community has ever caught one, for instance. Which saves worrying about that, at least. Especially since I know there's been at least one virus that inverts someone's personality.
