There's a wide variety of reasons. The most common seem to be that the believers are desperate for comfort or in need of a balm for their fragile egos. For most people, the probability that they are nothing in the grand scheme of the universe and their lives have meaning only to the few people they've managed to touch, is extremely daunting.

I don't know. Gods exist. Belief means that you think something is true. But gods do exist, so why believe in gods? It's like believing in a chair.
