There's a wide variety of reasons. The most common seem to be that the believers are desperate for comfort or in need of a balm for their fragile egos. For most people, the probability that they are nothing in the grand scheme of the universe and their lives have meaning only to the few people they've managed to touch, is extremely daunting.
Because it makes life easier. Without a God, one must make ones own decisions and be responsible for ones own actions. Far better to blame the world upon someone else.
Because people like to have someone to blame when things go bad. At least that's what it seems like these days. Folks go around doing shit, but as soon as shit happens to them, it's not their fault - it's some dude in the sky.
