It depends on the circumstances of your death. Ya know, if there's a grudge or strong emotion involved.

Well, if your anger is strong enough it attaches you to the world until it's resolved. If it's really strong, it may become a grudge. The grudge can either be purified or satisfied, but my bet's on the former happening first. Once it's purified it returns to the reincarnation cycle.

If it's satisfied, well, both the grudge holder and the victim of the grudge go to Yomi. It's a vicious cycle, ya know? Anyways, the souls usually stay there forever. Even less likely is that by the will of the presiding Kamiyonanayo, they're either let back out or erased from all existence.

That also depends. If you've lived an absolutely pure life, you are welcomed by the Kami into the afterlife.

If you haven't lived such a life and provided that no one holds a grudge against you, then you may be reincarnated until you finally do live a pure life.

It's certainly something to think about. You can end up a whale or a tree in your next life!

I don't think turning into a tree would be so very bad, really. Though I suppose many people would think otherwise.
