ghostshippingly: ([listen] they were talking)

Excuse me community! If you don't mind and you've got a little time, I have something to ask you that I'm curious about. A conversation with one of the Doctors got me thinking, you see, because even though it's something I've worked with a lot on my world, I've never really thought about how it might work on others...

Sorry, I'm rambling a little, ha ha. Um, anyway! My question is, could you all tell me about how the justice system works where you come from? I guess you could call this research.

I'll go first! Anyone who's interested might have to ask Mr. Edgeworth for a more accurate description, though... I've worked on a few cases, but I don't know that much. On my world when a crime is committed, the police usually arrest a suspect, and then the prosecution and the defense have three days in court to get a guilty or not guilty verdict. People usually think that the suspect did it though, even when they haven't collected all the evidence, so really it's usually a fight to prove what really happened... anyway, I think the system is unfair, but I've never thought about asking other people how it works for them! So that's why I'm asking now, really.

Thank you very much!

There's an actual "justice system"?

[Eyebrow raise. The hawk-winged man isn't exceptionally surprised, however. More amused than anything else.]

We have nothing like that. In the human countries here, law is dictated and enforced by royalty and steel respectively. Among we of the hawk tribe, it's a bit more relaxed. We don't have a "law", per se, so much as an agreement. If you kill someone, prepare to be killed. Otherwise, work it out with fighting or talking. Whatever works for you.
hawkblocker: (What are you hiding?)

Our world is divided into humans and laguz, primarily. The two dominant species, created by the Goddess. The hawk tribe of Phoenicis are hawk-type laguz. My people. Essentially, we're half-bird and can shift into full form.

So your world has progressed far past that part? Perhaps there's hope for the humans after all.
hawkblocker: (Are you sure about this?)

[personal profile] hawkblocker 2012-01-19 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No, we of the bird tribe are only one variant; the beast tribes of Gallia and the dragons of Galdoa both have their own types.

Your world has a lot of countries?

[personal profile] potatochips 2012-01-19 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine works the same as yours more or less, so I wouldn't bore you with specifics.

It's a flawed system.
potatochips: (My homework is kill 400 criminals)

[personal profile] potatochips 2012-01-19 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It could.

In a system where a guilty person could win against a victim and technically be rewarded for a crime one really has to wonder how much the 'justice' part applies.
potatochips: (Did I leave the oven on?)

[personal profile] potatochips 2012-01-19 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It is quite a problem. I don't know any attorneys myself but I know plenty of great officers putting their life on the line that have had more than one criminal they caught go free on them once they hit court.

A problem without people of enough influence willing to try and fix it.

That sounds just about as it is over here. Only one thing, though - three days?
specialest_agent: (The Red World)

[personal profile] specialest_agent 2012-01-19 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Not fair? It just doesn't work at all. You don't conduct an investigation in three days unless you're very good, or very dumb.

There's more than one justice system in any kinda world. There's personal justice, too.

The fewer stops 'n offices 'n professionals it's got involved, the more fair it usually is.
material_guy: (On the money)

[personal profile] material_guy 2012-01-19 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's cuttin' out the middle men, so everyone's payin' closer to a fair price, without any kinda cut goin' out to some third 'n fourth party. It's kinda like buyin' from farmers's usually cheaper than buyin' from the store.

It's worse to do bad things to some people than others.

We used to have one on my world where the government let one major company control the laws...it wasn't a very good justice system.

It was. I got out, but I still feel awful for the people still there.
