I hope you'll all indulge me in a little data-gathering exercise. Nothing so formal as a poll, because I'm sure the answers will be far too varied for a simple multiple-choice exercise.

First off, we would like to hear some details about your world. How prevalent are instances of supernatural phenomenon? What year is it, and what sorts of technology do you have? Some of you may not think your world is anything special, but please don't hesitate to volunteer information about the most mundane of homes.

The second is a personal question-- there has been some interest in what people on other worlds spend their lives on. If you wouldn't mind spending a few words describing your profession, we would be much obliged.

The supernatural - as you put it - is everywhere in my world. But most are unaware of it or think it is a fiction since the Ministry of Magic have ridiculous laws to keep it hidden.

The year here is 1899 but there are others from my world - with access to this community - who live in the future.

I have no profession but I do have many plans and goals. Freedom, being one.

They're organised in their own way - but pathetically behind the times.

Freedom from having to hide away and pretend that I'm not a wizard.

[she's laying on her back and saying this all fairly quickly, just smiling up at the ceiling.]

If I'm not involved in the supernatural, how would I know? Or perhaps it's not supernatural by my standards; I don't know how you judge these things. I don't keep track of the year, and I'm very new to technology, but I understand that it's standard for the time and place. As for information, there are strange standards for food here. I spend my life eating and sleeping. Occasionally I'll walk somewhere, but I recently enrolled in a school, so there will have to be time for that now, won't there?

[she sure is going to be a huge brat.]

Are you trying to get information from me by being wrong? I could just choose not to correct you. [but she decides to answer, for some reason.] Not really close. I don't keep a careful eye on the date, but I think it's some time in the early 21st Century, and I'm in Japan. I've never been outside of it, actually, so I'm certainly not a foreigner. What would you say now?

Supernatural? There're vampires. I've been weighing the possibility that there are other things along the same lines, especially since I stumbled upon this community, but I haven't seen any myself.

The year's 2012. Technology... well, there's television, but that's not really new... Space faring would probably be the thing to measure this by. Can't say I know much about it, though, except that so far there's nothing as complicated as living on other planets or anything.

[personal profile] occultistpeter 2012-02-08 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on what your version of traditional is. Bloodsuckers, definitely - and at least in my world, they all either kill or turn you, no draining some blood and then leaving you alive. There's several different breeds, but most can be killed with fire, sunlight, a beheading, or a staking - and are weak to holy water and crosses in certain circumstances. You can't see them in a mirror or camera, and they can't enter your home without an invitation.

List whatever you can think of and I'll see if I remember something similar.

Time is meaningless in my world. So is technology. [as for the supernatural? it's a new concept to her, this human term. she isn't certain what exactly could be called supernatural in her world. "supernatural" to her, or to humans? her own perspective lies on a blurry line.]

I help keep the peace here. [as close as it can get to peace, anyways]
starblaze: (seize it somehow)

A loose concept. Most of us don't even think about it.

... No. There's no war here. [just a constant struggle among souls]

I live in the early 1920's and a lot of things are much further behind than most others here. We don't have televisions or computers. There are cars but there a lot of them.

There's no magic in my world but we do have alchemy.

The existence of supernatural occurrences in my world is up for debate. There's no scientific evidence to prove anything, but the anecdotal evidence can be overwhelming at times.

It's 2010 over here. I would describe the technology as middle-range, compared to the rest of the community; things like television and the internet are commonplace, but, for instance, space travel isn't available to the general public.

I'm a criminal profiler working for the FBI.

The existence of this community would seem to validate them.

My world is overflowing with 'supernatural' phenomena, but we don't think of it as such because it's normal for us. Ghosts, zombies, dragons, instant healing drinks, and so on, which doesn't even begin to get into the magic.

The year is 1007 AA (After Apocalypse). Our technology is mostly on par with the Earth Industrial revolution, although our robotics and medical technology is far ahead and our transportation is a bit behind.

Formerly, I was a general. Right now, I'm a god!

I'm in the afterlife, we can make things from dirt, and we can't die because we're already dead. I think that covers supernatural pretty well!

As for my profession, I don't spend my life on it because I'm already dead, but I'm rebelling against God.
