There’s been quite a stir in the art world lately, revolving around the famous statue: Venus De Milo. Naturally, it has caught my attention as well. It’s been said that the mysterious arms to the beloved statue, have been found. Soon the whole world will be able to see the Venus De Milo, or in other words, the Greek goddess Aphrodite whole as she should be…

Although, there’s enough evidence to judge how the arms have been originally positioned and what the statue may have looked like. The statue itself was designed to meet the time’s standards. A very classical approach, I must say. It’s believed that she was holding an apple and glancing in its direction.

However, with the missing arms it seems to cause a mysterious allure about it. Artists have been driven crazy by it. Amazing what piece of artwork can do. There's been a lot of criticism already upon this new find creating some heated discussions.

Do you think that the statue should be left alone? Or do you feel that it would be better to see it completed? How far would you go to see something like this completed? Or would you stop it?

Can't someone just make a copy with the arms? Then you got one of each, if it's all special without 'em.

So there'll be at least one with arms 'n one without, and people can make as many copies as they want of whichever one they like. It's fine, right?

I don't see a problem with reattaching the arms if they are the statues true arms, it's what the original artist intended.

I can only form an opinion based on the artist who originally created the statue as a whole. I understand people keep referring to the value and the mystery of the art, but some things are more important than the sum of their worth.

So are the arms the original, or are the counterfeit?

That sounds dubious. If the arms are the ones that truly belong to the statue then they should be reunited.

I think that it is perfectly alright as it is. There must be some reason, even by chance of fate, for the part to be missing. It is an inspiration, didn't you say? I would say, allow it to continue to inspire.

I see. I am sure there are other ways to satisfy ones curiosity, even in this case. A replica, perhaps, as has been suggested by others? I think in some cases it is better to be unaware; things are the way they are for a reason, after all.

Sounds rather stupid and a waste of value. It would be like letting someone paint over The Mona Lisa or The Last Supper because the color has faded over the past centuries.

I'm not sure how many art enthusiasts would want the new improved version, even if it is the original. Then you have to wonder if the insurance on it will go up? It's been broken once, does that increase the value or the risk?
nie_unschuldig: (how annoying)

[personal profile] nie_unschuldig 2012-02-21 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Guess it's a good thing I'm not an art thief then, would be a waste to steal something that isn't worth what it used to be.
nie_unschuldig: (want to know a secret?)

[personal profile] nie_unschuldig 2012-02-21 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
True. If one were to steal the original before they decide whether or not to put the arms back on, it would be worth the effort. Especially if you find someone who doesn't want it fixed and would be willing to pay to make sure it doesn't happen.

Would just need a buyer but I'm sure a few connections would know someone interested if it came up.

Mind letting me know how that turns out? The premise and outcome are both intriguing.

Possibly, but occasionally I do try to remember to ask for information; the community only shows so much.
