It depends. Most laguz will respect you if you're stronger than them. Most humans won't, even if you kill them. Sometimes simply showing them that you're better will work. If all else fails, make sure they can't do anything else but listen and be patient until they finally give up and accept that they have to.

Respect is most often earned by actions, not words. Perceived intention plays a part too.
