My dear members of the community,

I understand that emotions are an inherently illogical facet of life, but sometimes they seem even more illogical than one would expect- take, for example, viruses. There seems to be no way to resist or avoid them, and they can make you feel or do things that you would not otherwise do.

In that case, feeling guilty for such actions or emotions would seem to make very little sense, wouldn't it? Yet it seems to be somewhat widespread and I must confess myself to be baffled by this phenomenon. There is no reason to blame yourself for a feeling that was imposed upon you in an irresistible fashion by an outside force.

Why is it that people do?

Whether performed willingly or not, the events of a virus can result in emotional consequences which do inspire guilt.

Emotional consequences I can certainly understand, but refusing to see reason is another matter entirely.

Because people are stupid and allow illogical moral systems to rule their beliefs.

That's certainly one possibility.

Most people tend to follow some code they were brought up with, more often than not it's based on some religious bullshit that they can't prove. So they allow some potentially nonexistent deity to determine what is right and wrong without understanding how stupid it is. Then they feel guilty over things that don't always matter in the end.

Regardless if they were responsible for their actions or not, people do tend to feel guilty over such things. They apologize more so to make themselves feel better really.

I must admit that would make some sense.

I really don't think feeling guilt is really something anyone can control. I mean, you can try to reason the feelings away, but it never really works completely.

Emotions can be very frustrating, sometimes.

They are what they are. You just have to deal with them as they come.

Perhaps such actions under the viruses leave people to wonder if perhaps there is some truth to them.

There is still no need to apologize. At least in some cases.

It doesn't matter if it's illogical. If it's bugging you, just apologize, pay it off, make it up 'till you figure yer done with it.

Then tell it to them. People with problems don't wanna be understood, they want 'em solved. Even if it don't make no sense and can't be understood even if you solve it.

I do not know if it is possible to simply avoid feeling guilt, even when reason says one should not.

I suppose it is rare for emotions to behave in a rational manner.

Unfortunately, emotions and rationality rarely cross paths.

I think...these viruses have a tendency to make people feel very uncomfortable with what they do and how they act, even if it is something totally out of their control... sometimes these viruses bring about things that are latent...like ideas, values, desires, and beliefs...I think that probably causes some guilt. The closer it is to home the worse a person tends to feel...

Perhaps that is true. [That would... explain a lot. But that doesn't matter. :|]

If one has acted in a way that is actually cruel or displeasing, I can understand feelings of guilt. I am sure that I would. Otherwise...
