[[She attempted to lock this from Yuri, but it didn't work very well.]]

[There's an unsure-looking girl on the community today. She's sitting on a stump in the late afternoon sunset.]

So... I kinda have a weird question. I've spent all my life devoted to research. I like it, but... it makes me feel weird when the others talk about the things they do in their free time, and I just read books and come up with magical theory. What do I-

[There's a rustling in the background and Rita's expression is replaced with a glare.] Pardon me. I need to take out some trash! [And there sits a single Polwigle, a large tadpole, hopping toward her; Rita's response is to stand and explode with energy.] Get out of my way! Splash! [A pot filled with water rises from under the Polwigle, knocking it down, before the water falls in a column. Rita, meanwhile, seems to be calling energy for something with a huge grin on her face.] O resplendent mystery! Mystic Drive! [And a huge glyph appears under the thing, seeming to do some real damage before blowing the thing into the horizon. The grin fades after a moment, though, as she realizes she's just proved her point. She draws a large red book out of a nearby bag as she sighs and sits back down, starting to write in the book.]

This... is kinda all I'm good for. Yuri aside, all the others have things they're good at that aren't directly involved in hurting things. I feel like I missed something when I was younger, and I'm not sure what to do about it. I could... [The girl's face runs hot and she averts her gaze from the camera. Pride issues?] ...use some help figuring this out.

I think I understand how you feel. Because of my powers, I never got to have a normal life, and it really bothered me for a while.

In my world, people my age are supposed to go to school, and have friends and boyfriends and hang out at malls. I spend my time fixing my motorcycle and making poison perfumes and dodging people trying to kill me for my job.

But...just because that's not 'normal' doesn't mean that I don't like it. Its all part of who I am, and giving it up would mean turning my back on everything I've accomplished.

I guess what I'm saying is that being normal is overrated, and if you care about magic, then you shouldn't worry about what you've missed.

Being normal is overrated, huh...? I mean, I like my magic and my blastia, but I guess I just wondered how the rest of the people live. Then again, this group isn't really "normal" anyway... Dammit, I didn't even question any of this until Yuri showed up!

Poison perfumes, though? That sounds dangerous. Interesting, though.

In my experience, yes. But maybe you should find out for yourself. I would never have realized it if I hadn't lost my powers for a while. And maybe this Yuri person could help you out with it!

Yup. The perfumes act as catalysts and unleash effects on whoever breaths them in.

I'm not sure what I'd do if I couldn't cast magic. I'd feel... naked, I think. It'd be like Karol doing something intelligent; it'd make me wonder what had happened in the universe that we screwed it up so badly. And frankly, Yuri is not the person to help anyone with a problem if it doesn't involve killing the problem dead. But I'll see if I can figure something out.

[The girl ponders the explanation.] Inhaled poisons... That's impressive. There's not a whole lot of alchemy in my line of research, so I don't have a whole lot of an idea how that would work, but it sounds like you've got something pretty effective on your hands.

You could visit some place where you didn't have to kill stuff all that often. There are plenty of worlds like that on the community.

It's pretty useful, but occasionally I have to go up against people who don't breath, which can be troublesome. I'm not nearly as good as my brother was.

Yeah, but that takes a worldhop, and that's something I don't have. And I don't know anyone that can get me to another world, either. I'd be interested if it were an option, but... it isn't.

[There's a skeptical look on the girl's face.] People who don't breathe? But that's not possible... right? How would you use an inhaled poison on something that didn't breathe, anyway?

How come you can't leave? There's plenty of people around here who seem willing to give worldhops out.

Punching them in the stomach so they gasp can work. Or inhaling the poison myself, and using its affects against them. There's a bunch of people who know how to avoid the perfumes, as well, which is mostly why I have to use the stranger ones.

When you think about it, you got somethin not a lot of people do. Okay, so some 'normal' people have hobbies like nnh uh, whatever normal people do-- but it isn't everyday you hear someone researching magic theories and shit. I think the more you over analyze, the more you're probably going to see flaw in something you got a gift for. Don't knock that!

You think so? I mean, yeah, it's true, not a whole lot of people study magic here, but... I guess it just never felt special to me. Maybe because it's all I've done since I was little.

Totally. If you think about it, it's good that it's such a natural thing to you. I sure as hell don't give another thought to the stuff I do... so it kinda slips my mind that there's less than 5 percent of the population with the same knowledge as me, let alone IQ. Pretty surreal sometimes. If you got a talent, you need to run the hell home with it. Make it into something people will want to come to you for you know?

I'm a researcher for the imperial labs; I don't sell my work. But the rest of it makes sense. The Knights seem to think I'm the go-to person for magical issues, and Yuri seems to think I'm pretty good at magic too. I guess I'm just... a little uncomfortable, if that's what I do in my spare time. The same thing I already do all the time.

[She shuts the book in her hands with a loud thud and a mulling expression.] Maybe this group isn't so bad after all. Estellise has the book smarts, Yuri has the street smarts, and I'm actually intelligent. Karol hits things.

Brains can take you anywhere. I do what I do for fun -- when I 'work'. And when I'm 'working' I do what I do for fun! I never get bored-bored. Just a little ... eh, I don't know the word. But... I'm never yearning for more. I'm always learning more in what I love, and never really feel like I'm missing out on something, cause I know it's what really makes me feel 'right'. Yup!

I think you might be onto something. I can just keep working on my magic and my research, because that's what I enjoy doing, even if it's what I'm known for and why people depend on me.

Hell yeah! Just cause its out of the ordinary, doesn't mean you need to stop. Rock on, and heh.. You're welcome! First time my so called advice has been of any help! Feels good man.

... Well, you have to have something that's not completely related to hurting things. I mean, even if you spend a lot of your time researching magic, you don't spend all of it researching ways to use it to hurt things right. Isn't there some other sort of use for magic in your world?

My magic... kind of. My actual magic itself is all offensive-based. The elements, except for light, are hard to channel into defensive structures. Light's a special case, but that's more reserved for holy magic. [She scowls.] Which is Estellise's job.

But there are structures called blastia that serve more general purposes. Bodhi blastia that let us use artes, the aque blastia in the capital's lower quarter that gives water to the entire section of the city, barrier blastia that keep monsters out of the cities... That's "magic", too, and it's a large part of my research, but most blastia are too large to be moved.

I see.

Well, that blastia stuff definitely sounds like it's something that needs to be researched more, right? Maybe you can try looking more into that stuff to see if there's ways you can improve the barriers, or make the smaller, movable blastia able to do the same thing as the larger ones for the cities?

That's actually part of the reason I'm traveling with Yuri in the first place. I'm on the verge of a breakthrough, and I needed more than just theoretical knowledge. I've made a few useful discoveries on this journey already, too. I just wish Yuri didn't get into trouble so much!

Well, that's good. What type of stuff have you found out?

It's a little complicated, but I'n working out a new formula for blastia: the Rizomata Formula. It'll increase power and efficiency, if I can get it to work, and I need to see a lot of different blastia to get an idea of how this will work. I've come across some interesting things in out travels, and it's starting to come together. I still need a few more pieces, though, and the weird blastia we keep coming across aren't helping. [Her expression shifts to rage.] Nor is that damned dragon freak that keeps destroying them!

Ahem. Anyway, Yuri is a whole different problem. The Knights are after him, that freak Zagi is chasing him, the Blood Alliance, we were nearly arrested in Capua Torim, he threatened a member of the Council, that stupid thing with the Great Tree of Halure - that still doesn't make sense! - and that's only the ones that are pissing me off right now.

Well, it's definitely good that you're getting everything that you need for what you're doing. But why's that person destroying the blastia?

And... wow. Yuri sure seems to get the attention of everyone possible, doesn't he?

I don't know! And it's only certain blastia, too! And... they're all weird ones, too. That one at Ehmead Hill, the weather control blastia in Capua Nor... [The girl pauses for a moment, realization dawning.] Is there something different about them, because of the different formula?

[It's a good minute or three before Rita shakes her head.] I don't know enough to guess... but I'm gonna have my eye on that dragon freak! The next time we meet, I want answers!

Yuri is popular in all the wrong ways. I know he's got some friends on this community, plus he's a hit with the Imperial Knights - I bet that Leblanc idiot crossed the ocean to keep up with us, Yuri's luck is that bad - and everywhere we go he attracts trouble. I don't even want to think about the mess in Capua Nor any more than I have to. It's not like he even does it on purpose half the time, things just happen to him. And by extension, us.

*She nods.*

Yeah, asking whoever's destroying that why he or she is doing it is probably the best course of action at this point. If only because I doubt anyone else here on the community is going to be able to give you any answers.

... And wow. That must be horrible to be going through a bunch of bad things like that. And having people willing to chase you around the entire planet.

Unless he's on the community. Which is unlikely but certainly possible. [Rita takes a moment to give a long, hard glare into the camera.] If he's here, I will find him, and he will regret it.

[The girl sighs.] Honestly, it's a headache. It's not like we weren't going to travel anyway, since we're looking for the lower quarter's aque blastia core, it's just harder since everyone's out to get us. The Knights are one thing, but it's just creep after mercenary after recurring idiot, and it's starting to get just a little old. Hopefully we'll find the aque blastia core sooner rather than later.

Wow. That really is some bad luck. You'd think you'd at least get a little break in between having to deal with one of them, right?

I think I might know the feeling.

Well... you could try out some new stuff and see if there's anything you like enough to wanna get better at. Or maybe you could try doing something new with what you already know? I dunno, I'm not too good at this.

Well... that's the problem, too. I'm on a journey, I can't just up and say "I'm bored, I'm going to go fishing" or something. Although Yuri seems to get away with that. Maybe doing something new with my magical knowledge would work...

It could be worth a shot, right? Or... if you ever stop off somewhere on your journey for long enough that it gives you a chance to try something there, maybe that could work.

A lot of people are like that. If you enjoy your learning, there's no reason to be ashamed of it. If you want to pick up a hobby, I suggest taking one afternoon off each week to try something new until you find something that makes you feel alive.

That's a bit of the problem. What with the search for Yuri's stupid blastia, I can't take time off. I barely even know where we are. Somewhere between Capua Torim and... I don't even know. Dahngrest, I think, but that's so far away it may as well not even count. At least I can still take comfort in my studies.

Try not to overwork yourself, ok? Even if you enjoy it, if you tax your mind too much on top of what you're doing now, you'll probably end up sick.
