Is anyone besides me tired of student government being a popularity contest? Or the way the people with all the money make all the real decisions? Someone's posted a threat to just flat-out buy campus and bulldoze it. Can we stand for that?

We need to tear down the broken system and start over. Who's with me?

I'm not sure anyone believes they could really do that.

It's the people within the system that best stand a chance of changing it.

The fact that they can even get away with acting like they could is enough to show there's a problem.

And yet, somehow, they haven't managed it yet. What does that tell you?

She believes she can buy the campus. We all know she can't.

That it's the wrong people on the inside.

And like I just said, getting to the point where she believes it is enough. Things have to change.

And I suppose you know how to get the right people in?

The right people would need to run, first. Have you thought about it?

You've seen how the actual government runs. How much chance do you think an outsider would have?

None. Either run yourself or find someone else who wants change to support.

If you plan on running, hiding behind an anonymous tag isn't a good start.

You seem to be under the impression I'm actually agreeing with you.

Like none of what was said really bugs her. ] After talking with her for about five minutes, I'm pretty sure the person who made that threat is completely nuts anyway. Plus, they'd spend less money going to another school and actually be good at staying rich if they didn't blow it all on stupid crap like that. Also I'm pretty sure she's not a student, just a visitor.

But! [ She holds up a finger, her voice getting more domineering, maybe bossy. ] It's supposed to be a popularity contest. That's why it's won by popular vote. If people don't like you and your ideas for the school, then they shouldn't vote for you. Ange and I haven't just been going around giving out cupcakes, we've also been going around talking to clubs and seeing if we can't work out things to make them better for them or find funds.

[ Yuri shrugs, then leans back in her chair, both hands on the arms and crossing her legs. A smile on her lips. ]

So, Mr. or Ms. Anon, why don't you go ahead and start telling me what's wrong with a system where people vote based on the candidate that they like best? That's what all democratic systems are run on in the first place. If it wasn't a popularity contest, it'd be a dictatorship or a family like the Ushiromiyas would be in charge of everything in the school and not because a bunch of students willingly voted one into being the vice president. I'm going to be president if I get the popular vote because that's how it works in fair societies.

[ And she uncrosses her legs, leaning forward and folding her hands. ]

If anyone's got any questions about my policies or anything, let them speak now or forever hold their peace until an official debate.

You skipped over my point the first time. If it's so much easier for the right people to get in and make change happen from the inside, why hasn't it happened yet?

And if the only people who can get in are the wrong people, doesn't that prove the problem is with the system itself?

My problem is that it's devolved into a popularity contest for the people, not their policies. And all the real power still just belongs to the people with the most money.

My problem isn't with you. If I'd had an issue about one candidate, I'd have said it. It's bigger than one person.

Getting in is the hard part. It becomes easier after you get in and a lot less messy.

All governments are corrupt. Idealism may exist in the beginning, but in the end, an elite will emerge and hold control.

So far every candidate I've ever seen who's promised radical changes has failed to deliver.

Like I keep saying, the mere fact that some of them appear to actually think they can suggests that the system's gone wrong.

That's why you shouldn't sit passively by and just vote one in.

Honestly, the one I spoke to is probably the most palatable. And at least she's making an effort to have a policy.
