History there is, and no history

Well well, Carnival is upon us once again. A time for masks and illusion the freedom it brings.

In the midst of all this chaos, it makes one question what humanity would become if our constraints were truly cut away. Would we become monsters or saints, Madmen or Madonnas? My own experience seems to indicate the former, but I would love to hear your arguments for the latter.

-------------

Also, I usually host a small party to commemorate this occasion. But perhaps we should spice it up this year in light of recent events?

I challenge any of you who dare to find my newest monster and I within the Festival of the Masked Future. Transportation will be provided, and if you succeed in recognizing us you may have all of our powers at your disposal for the rest of Carnival.

Though I doubt even the best of you could differentiate between the madness my pet creates and the normal festivities, or between my illusions and the masks others wear, its an interesting challenge, yes?

It might depend on the individual as well, right? In some cases, maybe.

Though, umm... I've never been to a Carnival before. Is that some kind of Western holiday?

Ah... well, I guess we'd all like to think perfection, right? But, mm... I guess it's more likely to be somewhere between the two, really. Humans aren't completely good, but we're not completely evil, either.

Oh... that makes sense, I guess! At least, the weather getting better is definitely something to celebrate.

Everyone can be either, right? Honestly, I think most people are a little bit of both.

Yeah, it's just that most people keep sorta lingering inbetween most of the time. There's only a few extreme cases.

A challenge, indeed.
For most.

Well, can you?

Go ahead, then.
I have little more to do now, and I do enjoy a good game.

I think the answer should be clear enough at this point.

Really? Well, you certainly wouldn't be the first. Or maybe even the last.

Playing games is gratifying. What do you find so mysterious about that?

You know this page is the _only_ hit for this phrase on Google?

No history, indeed.

I've been a fan of Somtow's work since the '80s. I showed up at a con once wearing a t-shirt with 'qithe qithembara...' on it and he boggled delightfully.
