These two guys- they call themselves pirates, but they helped save a village from other pirates who were destroying it. They invited me to travel with them.
[Rather, she was offered a spot on the crew, but only accepted "traveling along with."]
Not really. Maybe it's different for your pirates but there are people who don't have much choice but to turn to crime because of their circumstances. If it's that or starving on the streets, I think most people would turn to crime to try to survive.
Then on top of that, the second that you turn to doing something less than legal doesn't mean that you're magically the worst person in the world and lose all morals you know.
I met two of my own closest friends in less than favorable circumstances, too - they'd taken a certain item I was looking for from the bandits who'd stolen it. I've ended up traveling with them, off and on.
If your luck is anything like mine, going with them is likely to lead to a lot of very... interesting experiences.
Pirates aren't like normal thieves. I'm a thief. To be a pirate you need a crew, a ship, and all kinds of things you can't get if you're "just trying to survive" or help your family.
I'm not saying you are, but there are those who don't have a problem murdering a family even outside of pirates. Some pirates do that, but some don't. Everyone within a certain group isn't the same.

That's a quick reversal, though. Who did you meet to leave such an impression?

But there are things I won't do, and those are the things pirates do.
