I'm sure I don't need to tell you all about the incident the other day, on Nanoha's world. Part of my job is to protect Unadministered Worlds - those that don't have magic, or do have magic but aren't part of the Bureau - from the dangerous effects of Lost Logia, as well as dimensional criminals that might think a nonmagical world is a safe place to hide. To that end, my mother and I are formally taking on the case on UA #97, locally known as Earth. We're setting up for some plans; our preparations are going to take a while, and we need to make sure everything looks good before we get started.

I need some help with those plans, though. It's a little bit of an odd question, but... what does one look for in a place to live? My mother is still letting me lead the mission, and she's helping as little as possible; I have no idea what I'm looking at here, and I've spent the last several years of my life chiefly on starships. What unit of measure is an "acre"? Why do I care if there's natural gas hooked up? Are these numbers for crime artificially inflated?

[As he speaks, Chrono looks through papers in front of him in the briefing room, trying to make heads or tails of anything more arcane than "two bedrooms".]

Well from what I remember, an acre is a measurement that encompasses several hundred meters. You usually don't need an acre of land unless you're living on a farm or in a rural area.

Natural gas is a fuel source in our world, and most other worlds. It's not like we have coal burning stoves anymore, but natural gas is used for heating and for cooking in some cases. And crime rates usually depend on where you are in town and what kind of city you're living in.

Can you translate the local language? Travel guides for the country in question will probably be of use to you.

An acre of land is 4000 metres square, or abouts. Natural gas is used as a means of powering, heating and cooking within a house. As for the crime figures I can't say. Japan, I'm assuming?

... I guess the first question that I need to ask you is where on Earth are you going to be moving to. And what kind of place do you want to live in and how much do you want to pay.

And also, how long are you planning on staying? Is it just until the case is over, or are you going to stay after it?

Ah... Our measures are a little different, where I come from. We're not going to be too far out in a rural space. Our... protection target... lives in the city, and if we're too far away, there's no point. We don't really use natural gas, either - magic powers some functions in our homes, and we've got cleaner forms of energy regardless.

Yes, I can parse Japanese through my Device. I'll take a look... we've been here before, six months ago by my time, but we stayed in high orbit then.

We're looking at an area in Japan, ideally in the same place as the person we're protecting, in Uminari. I'm going to review some places in the area, but the idea is to be close by, just in case. I think we need at least... two bedrooms? Maybe three?

Your best bet is to get an apartment. Rent that out for a while, or even buy a house if you can. But if you're protecting someone then I'd say an apartment close to your target's home would do.

That's what I was thinking, honestly... a house would be a reusable asset for Bureau personnel if we needed to conduct operations later, but an apartment would be a more reasonable place for now.

[A beat.]

...As long as nobody will mind the fact that one room will have to be modified into the away team's command center.

We're setting up in Uminari, a seaside prefecture in Japan where Nanoha lives - the objective is to keep an eye on her, so distance is a factor we have to consider. Dwelling type... is still up in the air. I've heard arguments for both an apartment and a house; anything less permanent than that might attract attention. As for price... it's an investment in a successful mission, so cost isn't necessarily an object.

I'm not sure on the timing yet, either. We're certainly staying for the duration of the incident, but... depending on a certain person, we might stay longer.

You probably want an apartment then if you're looking for something less permanent right now. As well as a three bedroom if you want to do that sort of thing.

[Chrono counts on his fingers: one, two, three... a hesitation, before counting three again... four, five, before shaking his head and apparently un-counting five.]

Mother can share a room with Amy... if it comes down to it, I can share with Fate. The ferret will probably stay with Nanoha, in case something happens. That'd leave one room for command equipment, and the public spaces to look as normal as possible in case someone looks in a window. Yes, that sounds feasible, I think. We can entertain other options, but for now, a three-bedroom apartment sound feasible.

Now I just have to find something close to Nanoha, work out utilities, find a school for Fate to keep up appearances...

Three bedrooms then would be optimal then I figure.

As for schools, why not the same school Nanoha goes to?

Okay. You're definitely not going to want anything with an acre of land, because that's massive and space in Japan is expensive.

You're probably going to want to do an apartment. Houses are also pretty expensive too, but if price isn't an issue you might want to look into it.

Especially if you decide to stay longer than the mission.

Yeah. I'll refine my search a little bit, then.

Nanoha's school... that'll give her a little more coverage if anything happens. That's actually a good idea, and I'm not sure why I didn't think of it before. Thank you, I'll look into that.

Okay, that's sensible. Besides, if we want open space, we'll just teleport somewhere. [He crosses something off a list just within vision.]

I'll talk to my mother about the possibility of a house, too - Fate's a big wildcard, given Nanoha, and really, #97 isn't a bad place when things aren't going to hell. And even if we don't stay ourselves, we can use it as a mission staging point for future operations.

Probably a downtown apartment would be suitable then, come to think about it. There's a lot of similar apartment buildings in my area too that may be similar to your own.

That's true. And they could spend the time to get along.

Yeah. That's also a good point that I wasn't thinking about.

[ She smiles a bit. ]

I mean, considering everything that seems to happen on Earth in your version of the world, well... it's probably a good idea to have some people there.

I'll take a look, then. I need to get a few options in line before I present my options to my mother for final consideration as the commanding officer, but this will help narrow things down a lot.

I think Nanoha would appreciate the company, as would Fate. I'll prioritize that in my report, too. Morale is... important, in this line of work.

You also want to get a place in a decent part of town mind you. Especially if you'll be living there with family members.

They're your friends, the ones you're protecting right?

Yeah. I think I mentioned it to Nanoha before, but I wouldn't be averse to putting a permanent outpost on this world, if it came to that. Plus it's not a bad vacation spot, if you wanted to get away from all the Bureau tourist traps.

Yeah. My mother and I, a girl we're... well, a combination of training and protecting, her keeper, the communications officer from my ship, and Nanoha's trainer from the last time we were here. The six of us, plus Nanoha... taking on what sure looked like one of the most dangerous artifacts known to the Bureau.

I want us to have every advantage I can justifiably give, and not having to worry about where we're sleeping is definitely something within my power.

Sounds like a normal run on the community. Although my idea of normal changed rapidly a while ago.

Okay then. So I guess the main reason behind your decisions is going to be a pretty simple one. Just how many people are you going to have staying there with you?

This place seems to do that. I'd apologize, but... you seem to be a lot happier now than you were when you first appeared to us, so I suspect you don't mind it so much.

Let's see... my mother and I, Fate and Arf... Arf doesn't really count since she can shift into forms that take up less space... Amy, and Yuuno... well, no, he'll be with Nanoha so he can keep an eye on her, just in case. Four, I guess, and a... wolf?

I learned a lot of good lessons about friends. So I know how important it is to be on good terms with people.

Okay, so if it's going to be four of you and a pet, a larger apartment is probably a good idea. I mean, you're going to need four bedrooms, right?

Theoretically. I could share a room with Fate in a pinch, and my mother could share with Amy, but we should also have access to something we can use as a remote command center, which would require us to either set up part of a public space discreetly, or to use another bedroom.

...More than likely, though, it's going to end up being a large apartment, if we can find one downtown. There's no way we'd find a house that big on such short notice, though I'd really like to find a way. Hayate's starting to worry me too, these days.

Yeah. That's... something you could do. But I don't think it'd be a good idea for you all. You're going to want to have your own rooms. Which means that you might need to have five rooms somehow.

[ She pauses for a moment. ]

What do you mean, Hayate-chan's worrying you?

That's fair. I'll look for big places, then. In a worst-case scenario, we could take shifts back on the Asura - someone needs to be up there from time to time, anyway, just in case.

[Chrono sighs.]

I mean that Hayate is... I don't know how to explain it. But I just get this feeling that she's hiding something. Something big, and when we find out we're going to be worrying about her again. Maybe I'm wrong, but... even if I am wrong, she could still use someone to check in on her every now and then. If I'm going to be in the area, I may as well.

Yeah. I guess that's a good point. I mean... that other girl, Nanoha. She can't really do it all the time. She might not be able to realize that something's wrong. They're both pretty young, after all.

They're both nine, as a matter of fact. Not I'm much older, mind you, but it's a world of difference. And she's not very good about being open with her problems. So the occasional social visit might do her some good, and ease my mind a little.

I mean, it's definitely a good idea to check in on her. You're going to probably want to check in on the other girl too. Especially with everything that's been going on lately. Even if she seems strong a mature, you just pointed out that she's still nine years old.

I'm not really sure on it the details but I guess you'd just think of the sorts of things you do at home already, then make a list of it and try to find a place that fits what you need out of it.
