To be honest he didn't tell me that part of the story.

In short, his entire family got murdered except for he and Ange, who wasn't there, and he engaged in a "game" with a witch that he thought was about whether or not magic existed but it was really about other more personal stuff. It got really complicated from there and now he's on the side of magic and playing to let his family's souls rest in peace and for Ange to not think everything sucks for all eternity. So yeah, he's a good guy. Just a very confused good guy who I want to kick in the nuts sometimes.

I wouldn't blame you for wanting to do that.

This also sounds like the plot of an anime to me, but since this place has a lot of weird things I'm not going to think it's fake this time around.

Building a robot is sort of logical though!

So build a small one that can get useful things done-- anyway, my point was that that's more straight out of an anime than anything.
