I have once again met up with Kaoru-dono, the young woman who runs the Kamiya-Kasshin school. And something she said has made me reflect on what has been going on lately with the community.
She believes that a sword should be used to "give someone life," to protect others. It is something that I wish I could believe in, but I have done enough to know the truth.

In the war, I was an assassin, the most notorious--the Battousai. It is not a past I am proud of, and now someone is using that name to commit murders and frame Kaoru-dono's school.

I had believed in what I was fighting for, believing that I could help bring about a new era free of the fear and pain of what I had lived in. But I know now that whatever sacrifices I made, I should have made of myself, not of others. I do not see any kind of belief, whether misplaced or not, in this imposter Battousai.

I suppose I have spoken around the point, but I am curious. What is it that you believe in, that you would sacrifice everything for, or fight or kill for? Although, I understand if I may make all of you uncomfortable, now that I have revealed my past.

What is your family like?

My wife Doloz is the sweetest woman you could ever meet. She takes good care of us, and she always has a sympathetic ear for anyone's troubles. She worries too much, but she's still as cute as she was when I married her so long ago.

My darling daughter Lobco is out seeing the world as a witch's familiar right now, and I'm looking forward to hearing her stories when she gets back. She's gentle, loyal, hardworking... They're both so precious to me.

Sometimes sacrificing yourself isn't enough. It's a fine ideal but in hard times people need results more than inspiration. More than looking for what a bunch of strangers think just for chit-chat, you're wondering what the right thing to do about this murderer is aren't you?

That is it. I do not wish to kill again, but I do want to prevent more bloodshed and to protect Kaoru-dono from more heartache. From the sound of it, the school is all she has left.

I might be asking the obvious but is getting them locked up out of the question?

This assasin has killed at least one policeman, and the wanted posters indicate many more killings.

I'm not sure about a weapon giving life but it can save a life. Once it's taken there's no giving it back. That's why sometimes it might be worse not to take one.

That is true. But if there is a way to defeat him and kill him, I would like to think that there is a way to defeat him without killing him.

Well, what she says makes a lot of sense. [It sounds like someone he used to know. Kenshin probably hears Vash sounds as serious as anyone on the community has.] It sounds silly to fight for peace because there can't be peace until everybody stops fighting but if there's any reason to fight, it's to protect other people.

But it's never okay to kill. People can change but if they're dead, they never get the chance. Just like you changed, everybody deserves the chance.

That is what I hope as well. But I am not so certain that others here may believe the same.

That's why it's good to be a teacher. [His voice is more sing song now, even if he's just as serious in his words.] You didn't know if you believed it until she told you. You must be pretty strong so use that to show them.

I would prefer to avoid fighting, but I cannot ignore injustice. I will not kill, but I hope I can protect others without resorting to that.

It's not always the easiest choice but if you don't give up looking from that angle, you'll find it.
