[A certain magical girl appears on the screen, holding up her weapons. They are indeed still green castanets, but they no longer resemble undetailed produce; they now have a more complex design and are the two-part type that can clack individually, and where the original metal clappers on the ends had gone, there's now a weird heart with the same two-fish insignia as the marking on her chest. Overall, they look similar, but less "designed to be easy and fast to draw" and more "designed to sell toys".]

I, um, I suppose this is an upgrade? But they don't really do anything different, except I can sort of dual-wield now instead of having to use them both to shoot one round of water. Anyway, that isn't really the point here, so, um...

If everyone else you know has gotten "upgrades" when they were actually on active duty, and you've been a magical girl over five years and just had this happen when you were fighting someone else's enemies, that doesn't say anything about you, does it? Please don't let it mean I'm terrible.

What kind of situations?

Well, when someone's stuck in a fight with an enemy they've had for a while, and usually at or around the same time that all their friends get the same kind of powerup.

I'd think for the first part, that if you're stuck so long, eventually your need to try something different might turn into a new kind of power. As for the second...maybe it's how my world works, but doesn't it make sense that if your friends are getting stronger, you should too?
