I do not fully understand the preoccupation many people have with masquerades. In addition to the Midsummer's Eve ball, this year we are holding a masquerade on All Hollows' Eve. Most seem to be full of adoration of this event, even though it is not so long since the last. We have been recieving many excited letters from those accepting the invitation, and even Lady Alicia and Finian are eager.

For this event, even the hostess and host are to disguised for some part of the night.

Finian wishes to match his costume to mine. I do not know what to be. I thought perhaps a seal, but that would not be wise, and what would Finian be with that? A fisherman again?

It is very puzzling, this enthususiasm to be other than yourself.

It helps you deal with life, sometimes. To pretend you're not who you really are. You can step back and look at yourself like you're a different person.

I understand that it could be beneficial to view oneself from another perspective, but I do not see how costumes allow it.

Why wouldn't they be happy with themselves?

Some people...arn't good people, and know it. So its nice to pretend that they're good, just for a little bit.

It is a means of escape. A way to channel emotions that one does not permit oneself to feel. When behind a mask... one has the chance to be anyone they choose, and therefore have a certain sense of freedom not necessarily felt when unmasked.

If you feel trapped within yourself, then you are not being your whole self. Shouldn't you seek to remedy that rather than seeking costumes?

Everyone has shortcomings. We all deal with them in different ways whether or not we know of them.

Some aren't comfortable being themselves. As Oscar Wilde once said, a man is most himself when not himself. Give him a mask and he'll tell you the truth.
