Do you have a New Year's resolution? If so, is it any better than these people's?

Shoot first and ask questions later. I've lost count of how many times we've lost someone we were chasing because someone insisted on getting answers first.

That's one way to look at things.

You might be right; maybe that's a little too direct. That's what I wish I could take as a resolution, I guess.

Answering more questions than I raise anew would be a good one, too... no, still too loose. I guess my resolution is to make friends this year. I'm still not really a people person yet.

That might have been my resolution a few years ago. Then it was to do more for my friends. Now I think it's more to be a better person worthy of them.

Those are all pretty reasonable, if you ask me. I'm a few steps behind you on that road, though.

Being connected to a near-infinite source of people that want to talk helps.

Oh, I'm sure there are only a few hundred of us right now.

Right now, maybe. But people come and go. And just because someone's left doesn't mean we all forget them.

That's true. In that case, there are many, many more, and they will probably never end.

Exactly. And if people keep coming, you'll keep meeting new people as long as you're connected to this thing. So it's not all bad.

[She shrugs.] What's your resolution for the year? Was that it before, about being a better person for your friends? Or is it something else?

Specifically, I want to practice self-control. I rouse far too quickly to anger. It's unbecoming of a monk.

Yeah, I'm not exactly the right person for that, with the whole "shoot first" thing five minutes ago. But good luck to you. You'll need it, I think.

Well, the needs of a monk are different from the needs of people who actually shoot people. So it's not so bad.

I guess... I'm just a little bitter. Things keep getting broken because my first response is "what the hell do you want?" instead of a fireball in the face.

Self-control is good, though. Maybe when we're not in so much danger, I'll look into that one.

But even so, if something could be resolved peacefully...

I'm sure it could, but most of the guild-types we're dealing with lately don't like talking things out. If diplomacy works, I'm all for it. That's what Estelle and Yuri are for. When negotiations break down, I'm the girl with the hurt.

There's a place for that. I can respect it.
