So the scenario involves the individual and companions that they know...my companions are a mixed bag. I guess I'd still have to choose their lives as opposed to mine.

It's not my choice to make over other peoples' lives. The only fair thing to do would be to explain the situation, explain the options, then try to find a way to put a stop to it in my own way regardless of what everyone else does.

As long as people believe in me, I cannot die permanently. So it would make more sense for myself or one of mine to die and return later.

If it was a permanent death, such as that which lies to humans, I suspect the choice would involve much discussion.
