...but, whoever's playing it obviously hates Ellen, so the characters focus their attack on Ellen who is easily defeated. The cat is freed, but obviously looks distraught over the fight. Did the player screw up?]

Probably only fans, and even then, from Showa or early-Heisei era stuff. I probably would have stood a better chance if Poseidon was kept as an option, but I lost that power after the guest boss stage was beat.

I hate inattentive players like that, but you did complain so I'm offering you advice. There're many ways to exploit the rules. For example, you could 'accidentally' hit the cat, or direct their attacks and jump out of the way so it hits the cat.
