Does anyone know what a manticore is?

It seems everything in the city outside the Library is connected to it. And now I seem to have a card with a protection spell from 'Manticore Street'.

I assume it is some kind of magical monster, but does anyone have more information? I would like to know what I might face should I venture out of the Library.

What are the street names generally like where you live then? Are they all named after dangerous monsters? Doesn't really sound like a relaxing kind of city.

I don't really know. I've never been out on the streets before. I just know this name because a man gave me a card with it on it.

[ Normally she would've found the whole "never going out" thing a little weirder, but then again, that's pretty much the life she's lived up to a point where she could just sneak out by herself.. ]

Is that man someone you know?

He knows me. And he showed me how to open my book and gave me the card that protected me against the Madam. I think that makes him a friend.

Well, I wouldn't be too quick to judge on that one. I mean, you never know for sure who you can trust. Sometimes people try to act all friendly and helpful to you just so they can betray you later. .. Or, if they're a guy, just so they can get into your pants after a while.

Of course you are right. Placing my trust in someone who claimed to see me is rather foolish. It is far more likely that he is the one who placed the malign enchantment in the first place, to let me play into his hand. Better not to see him again, I think.

[ .. Well, that was a quick change. Not that Ange can say it's for the worse, since it's better to at least be a little wary of people. Especially strangers. ]

Just make sure to keep an eye on him when he's there, that's all I'm saying. If you trust him too much, you won't even notice him pulling shady stuff right in front of you.

You are probably right. I have been isolated too long...I might have become too trusting and blind.

I had never thought that lack of practice with H- [a pause, as if she was going to write a word but then forgot it.]...manipulators would be a bad thing.

It's a good thing if you view it in the sense that it means you haven't had to deal with many troublesome people yet. But it's mostly a bad thing, yeah. It means you're not prepared for when they do show up.

I think its more likely that I do not remember the time I have spent with them. The Library is thankfully free of them, but that hardly means the places I was in before were so safe.

.. What do you mean, you don't remember? Do you have some sort of amnesia?

Something like that, yes. Everything from before the Library is gone or unnecessary.

I'm pretty sure there's no sort of thing like an "unnecessary" memory.

[ But that aside-- ] That's pretty strange though. Or, well, even if it's not strange to you, it sounds like it's a pain in the ass. It means you wouldn't even remember a specific person being untrustworthy or not.

The rules of this place are different than normal worlds. Many things get left behind, because the feelings they evoke can't happen here.

Yes. Though there are general feelings...like the manticore seems dangerous, yet Mr. Grassi seems safe. But I certainly wouldn't want to trust my instincts unthinkingly!
