I don't get this thing. Where did it come from? The technology is so different than what I'm used to. [She frowns then sits up, exhaling sharply so her bangs fly up away from her forehead.]

What makes it different from normal prosthetics? There has to be a reason you call it by a different name, right?

Automail is different! I can make prostheses as well, but automail is the study of bioelectronic engineering. I can great a limb - an arm or leg or hand or foot - and by the use of a port that connects to the patient's nervous system, create a prosthesis that can be moved and directed like the original limb!

Oh, I see. That must be great for the people who need it. But I am sure the operation must be done shortly after the injury, yes? ...and it is likely to be very painful.

It is painful. That's why people don't always want to get automail. But the surgery can be done whenever...to install automail, because the nerve port has to be installed into the body. That in and of itself is...very painful.

Mm! It takes time to learn how to make it. There are a lot of engineering techniques - and bioengineering techniques - an automail mechanic has to learn. My grandmother started teaching me when I was a little girl, though.

I'm still an apprentice but maybe in a couple of years, I'll be able to test for my license.

But I can teach rudimentary skills, at least!
