[The scene is a cramped room, full of mechanical bits and tools of all sorts. A teenaged girl is staring in the viewscreen. She reaches out and taps on the casing.]

I don't get this thing. Where did it come from? The technology is so different than what I'm used to. [She frowns then sits up, exhaling sharply so her bangs fly up away from her forehead.]

But I guess I can talk to people from here, huh? So, I'm Winry Rockbell. [A sweet smile breaks on her face.] I hope to get to know you soon.

I... I know you worry 'bout him. I would too. But... He, he understands, okay? He doesn't want you to lose him any more than you want to lose him. Maybe more than you think.

He would die for you. Hell, he'd survive for you - Major says that's harder, and she... knows about that.

He's going to be in danger. It's what he needs to do - he joined willingly, knowing the risks... but he wants to come back safe to you. And he's going to.

I know Ed's strong, Mr. Preston. But he's also cocky and sometimes, thinks he knows better than everyone else. That's what can get him into trouble. I'm sure you understand that, if you're a military man.

...You're his Anchor, Winry. Even if you don't technically need Anchors where you're from, that's what you are to him, and I think he knows it. He knows what he's doing, except when he doesn't; just... just next time and the time after that, try to beat it into his skull with words instead of wrenches, kay?

I don't want for him to be a weapon! I want him to be a boy. I want him to be happy again, him and Al both, with their bodies back and no need of the military. I know you're a military man but...he's not. Yes, he wants to help people but in his own way. Not because he's ordered to.

Yeah, I guess so. I'm just... well, let me say this - if an Anchor hit her Pilot on the head with a wrench, she'd be off active Anchor duty for at least a month.

I understand what you're saying, Mr. Preston, but this is really between Ed and me, isn't it? I know you care for him. I do, too. He and Al mean more to me than I can ever explain and you can begin to know. I'm not an Anchor and Ed's not a Pilot. We are what we are.

I appreciate what you think you're doing for Ed. It shows you're a good friend to him. But I've known him all my life. If he has a problem with the way I treat him, he'll tell me. And if you think Al would ever let me hurt Ed...you don't know those boys at all.
