It's 2:00am here on Isla Sorna and the sound of compys (Procompsognathus for those of you unfamiliar with dinosaur slang) chirping and scratching against the walls of the trailer prevents me from getting any sleep whatsoever. With my luck, I’m probably the only one awake and definitely the only one typing away at a laptop this late at night. But, hey. Anything to pass the time.

My name is Ian Malcolm and I’m a mathematician chaotician. Really, I couldn’t think of a better community to join, especially one that thrives on such chaos. It would make for an interesting experiment to see if my arrival might effect the community as a whole and if it will (hopefully not) cause any turbulence. Yup. That’s chaos theory for you.

Why, I'm surprised. A young man like you who attends such an exclusive and overpriced school does not know a little math? I'll put it in a brief and simple way.

Complexity theory, or chaos theory, is the behavior of certain nonlinear dynamical systems that under certain conditions exhibit a phenomenon known that we know as chaos.

Chaotic systems display characteristics such as sensitivty to alterations in a set path. This is commonly known as the "butterfly effect". Such sensitivity can cause chaos that appears to be random and erratic, even in systems where there is no unpredictability. The systems that I refer to can include but are not limited to the solor system, economics, population, weather reports, and even tectonic movement.

Even so, chaos has been proven to have an underlying order. The details of such order are still being studied today. Using chaos theory to our advantage, we can predict the outcome of things that had been previously thought to have been unpredictable.

Simply put, chaos is predictable.
