The idea then is to find a challenging goal that I can know how to achieve. Something like "practice self-control" is vague and hard to quantify. When a writer wants to write more, they challenge themselves to write a certain number of words a day, and at the end of the day they know if they have or have not lived up to what they set out to do.
Then is it not possible to find a way to quantify self-control? Small weaknesses, as opposed to the nebulous kind. Refusing an extra slice of cake, for an example.
