[shinji breathes into the microphone, static erupting through the speakers in short bursts. he sounds as if he's been pushed past the verge of tears and onto the brink of absolute panic, but he has to do this. he has to.]

Kaworu-kun...he's gone. It was strange that he was gone so early this morning, but I didn't think about it. Now it's been hours and he's not back. I called his job and his phone. They haven't seen him and he won't answer. All his things are here. Even his violin is here. He'd never leave without it. I can't find him. He disappeared. Kaworu left.

[an audible gulp, a shaky sigh.] And I can't find him at all. Tell me you've heard from him.

Please.

What? Kaworu, gone? [ WELL THAT'S. MILDLY PERTURBING. there's the sound of someone sucking in a thoughtful breath. ] That can't be right. I can have a poke about if you like, see if he left a trail of some kind?

[slowly, cautiously, hopefully,] Y-you could do that? You can find Kaworu?

Well - I'll be honest with you, I can't make any promises, but I can give it my best shot. Chances are I might be able to discover what direction he went in at least, even if I can't find him, and that'd still give us more clues than we've got right now.

That would be more than enough, sir! [the difference in shinji before and after ten's comment is like day and night. someone could put the world back together, someone with greater power then he ever had. that fact alone is enough to make him hopeful.]

Alright then! Give me... well, actually I dunno how long I'll be, inter-dimensional tracking without a TARDIS can be a right pain in the neck, but I'll see what I can cobble together and then I'll see about finding if he's left any sort of trail. I'll get back to you once I've found something interesting, alright?

[ when the Doctor next leaves a comment, his voice sounds... well, bewildered, at first. but there's notes of utter disbelief and just a little bit of wariness there, as well. ]

... Shinji, could you answer me something very quickly? Correct me if I'm wrong, but your original world - it's been cut off from the community for years now, hasn't it?

Yes, of course. Why...? [something in the way he speaks puts shinji on edge. no one put a question that way without a good reason.] Why do you ask?

Well... I dunno how, and I promise, I triple-checked everything just to make sure it wasn't just my equipment acting up because I'd put it together with the red wire going where the black one was supposed to be or something like that, but I managed to pick up a bit of a trail and... well, by all accounts, it looks like that's where he was headed. What I don't understand is why, though, I mean - why on Earth would he go back there?

But... [you can almost see the puzzled furrowed brow deepening on shinji's face.] That's so strange. Nothing exists there anymore so why go back? And why couldn't he just tell us if that was the case?

[ he sucks in a breath. ] Well... as to that, I dunno. It's difficult enough telling what's going on in his head at the best of times, so-- I mean, I could guess. Either something came up that he thought he had to investigate, or... or, well the community was involved, somehow. Though that doesn't make any sense either, I mean, like you said there isn't even anything left.

Still, on the bright side, at least this means we know for sure that he's not just vanished into thin air.

Yeah. [in a way, shinji is glad. kaworu--the kaworu he knows and trusts with his life--is still alive and well somewhere. that was more than enough to allay most fears. yet he had returned to the site of shinji's greatest failure. it made no sense. could he be looking for something? someone? what lay in the great sea to be salvaged?]

Do you think he'll come back?

[ honestly, the Doctor doesn't know. not entirely, anyway. but if Kaworu can be traced, then that means he's still around. which means the community will want to pick him back up eventually. which means that he has to come back. somehow. sometime. in what state, he's not sure.

but if there's anything he's good at, it's at having faith in his friends. ]

... yeah. D'you know, I think he will.
