[The scene is a cramped room, full of mechanical bits and tools of all sorts. A teenaged girl is staring in the viewscreen. She reaches out and taps on the casing.]

I don't get this thing. Where did it come from? The technology is so different than what I'm used to. [She frowns then sits up, exhaling sharply so her bangs fly up away from her forehead.]

But I guess I can talk to people from here, huh? So, I'm Winry Rockbell. [A sweet smile breaks on her face.] I hope to get to know you soon.

Winry, with all due respect, he's in the military. He gets shot at, in swordfights, and has weirdoes who shoot fire and ice out of chalk circles at him - in the course of his normal duties as a soldier.

Would you rather a bullet ruin the automail you made him - leaving him ALIVE for you to bitch at him about ruining it and repair it- or go through his heart, which, as I understand, is something that alchemists don't repair lightly if at all? Human transmutation isn't exactly a good idea, from what I can tell...

I can understand getting upset, but... hitting him? For getting shot at, and not dying by using a convenient peice of metal as a shield?

If Ed's been shot at, this is the first I've heard of it. It wouldn't surprise me, though. He does stupid things without thinking of the consequences. That's up to me to think about, Mr. Preston, because I have to design his automail to keep him mobile and keep him safe. If he doesn't tell me the dangerous things he's doing, I'm blindly designing his automail. What sort of trouble could he be in that it would...explode like that? Do you have any idea how he changes the structure of the metal when he transmutes his arm? It weakens the metal! Ed uses that arm to protect himself, I know that, but with each time he changes it, it becomes a poorer source of protection. Brittle. Fragile. Do you think I want him to die because his automail failed him?

I get angry because he takes risks instead of thinking things through. And if he has a knot on his head because of it, maybe next time, he might think about his actions before hand.

Winry - He's a soldier. State Alchemists are Majors. That means that he's technically got a battalion under his command when he needs it - think five dozen soldiers - and that from time to time he needs to make the other bastards die for thier country.

If you know he's a State Alchemist, and you know that, I can't buy 'I didn't know he was in that kind of danger' as an excuse.

Unless it's not something you want to think about - which I can understand, Winry, to be fair. And if he's kept most of this from you - well, he really doesn't want you to worry.

Which, of course, makes you worry more, doesn't it? It's a vicious cycle and he's not blameless, but between the two of you it's gonna get worse.

Believe me, I get it's protection... ablating. I can relate. I'm a soldier too... call me psychic operations. I deal with, and fight using, hearts and minds on my world. Sometimes literally.

If you think Ed's going to order men to their deaths, you don't know him as well as you think, Mr. Preston.

You're right, I'm worried. I know what him being in the military means. I know he could be ordered to be a human weapon. I know there's a possibility he might come home in a box, like my parents did.

He's going to be in danger. It's what he needs to do - he joined willingly, knowing the risks... but he wants to come back safe to you. And he's going to.

I know Ed's strong, Mr. Preston. But he's also cocky and sometimes, thinks he knows better than everyone else. That's what can get him into trouble. I'm sure you understand that, if you're a military man.

...You're his Anchor, Winry. Even if you don't technically need Anchors where you're from, that's what you are to him, and I think he knows it. He knows what he's doing, except when he doesn't; just... just next time and the time after that, try to beat it into his skull with words instead of wrenches, kay?

I'll try. I can't promise anything, though. If I act different...

All I ask. He trusts you. He... well, there are different kinds of love, and even if the only kind he has for you is the one that calls you 'meimei' with a straight face - little sister - he has that in spades with you.

'Little sister'? Oh, geeze.

Not saying that's what it is. Just that EVEN if what that is... I don't presume to speak for him, just I KNOW he has something deep with you, just from talking.

We grew up together. Of course there are feelings there.

My soldiers use relationships as weapons - fighting in a dream-battle, a battle of hearts and minds, literally. We call on friends and lovers for power...

I don't want for him to be a weapon! I want him to be a boy. I want him to be happy again, him and Al both, with their bodies back and no need of the military. I know you're a military man but...he's not. Yes, he wants to help people but in his own way. Not because he's ordered to.

If I knew what being a dog of the military meant, I wouldn't have wanted it either, let me put it that way...

So, Mr. Preston, we're at a stalemate, huh?
